Department of Economics, Business, Mathematics and Statistics (DEAMS) University of Trieste

Economics of Financial and Insurance Markets
Economics and Management of Innovation

The DEAMS is offering two English curriculum, Economics of Financial and Insurance Markets and Economics and Management of Innovation.

This initiative is designed to meet the needs of today’s fast-paced business markets which more and more require human resources capable of managing, assessing, and developing innovative processes that reflect current corporate standards and expectations of today’s work environments. In addition, the labour market demands individuals who can analyze and utilize new financial and insurance products developed for worldwide financial markets. This programme will prepare students to acquire these skills.

These three-year courses offer solid training in Economics, Management, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Law, which are in line with the tradition of rigor of the Economics Studies at the University of Trieste. However, they also present some innovative elements. In particular, together with the traditional courses, an intense list of seminars will be offered on the topics of Innovation, Technology Transfer, and the Economics of Risk and Insurance. Thus, students will be exposed to specific fields of training, starting with their first year of studies. These seminars and some of the classes will be held by visiting professors and experts representing prestigious institutions from around the globe and addressing the fields of Innovation, Finance and Insurance Techniques.

Both programmes will expose students to an international cultural environment of high profile and professionalism at a fraction of the costs which are encountered in the market for similar programmes.

The programmes in Economics and Management of Innovation and in Economics of Financial and Insurance Markets share the first two years courses, providing basic training in Economics, Management, Accounting, Mathematics, Statistics and Law, but differ in the third year and in the seminars offered.

In particular, the Economics and Management of Innovation path will focus on the subjects of Innovation and Technology Transfer, Intellectual Property Rights, and Innovative Entrepreneurship. All of these subjects will be thoroughly explored during the third year within specific courses, whereas the Economics of Financial and Insurance Markets path will focus on the Economics of Risk and Finance and, in the third year, specific courses on Insurance Techniques, Finance, Insurance Law and Banking will be offered.

It goes without saying that both curricula give students the possibility to study abroad by attending both, the Erasmus Exchange Programme with European Universities and Exchange Programmes that the DEAMS established with non-EU University (i.e. ASU of North Carolina and University of Northern Colorado). Internships with firms and/or research institutions at the end of the programmes are possible and encouraged.

All students with a high school degree may apply for the programmes. Foreign student applications are also encouraged. Students must pass the English proficiency test given by the Department of Economics in September. In any case students must pass the assessment prior to sitting for any of the exams within the programme.
